  • *The program is available to sons and daughters (including legally adopted or stepchildren) and to those with legal guardian arrangements if the parent or legal guardian is, or was at the time of retirement or death, a regular full-time or regular part-time employee (part-time employees must have had one year of service).

  • High school seniors with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) who plan to enroll in a full-time** undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university, or at an accredited vocational-technical school.
  • **Full-time study is defined as full-time enrollment for the entire upcoming academic year.

Applicants planning to enroll in an accredited college or university must take the ACT or SAT College entrance exam.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award ranging from $500 to $1,500. Up to forty (40) awards will be granted each year as follows:

  • Up to thirty (30) awards will be granted to children of Marathon employees, as long as there are qualified applicants.
  • Up to ten (10) awards are designated for children of Speedway SuperAmerica LLC employees, as long as there are qualified applicants.

Awards may be renewed for up to three years or until a bachelor's degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance in a full-time course of study and continued financial need. Each year, renewing recipients will be assessed for continued financial need and the possibility of an increase or decrease in their award, but in no event will an eligible recipient receive less than the $500 minimum amount. Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Scholarship Management Services will also administer renewal awards.

Application

Interested students must complete the application and mail it along with a current, complete transcript of grades to Scholarship Management Services postmarked no later than January 15. Online transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours earned for each course and term in which each course was taken. Applicants will receive acknowledgment of receipt of their application. If an acknowledgment card is not received within three weeks, applicants may call Scholarship Management Services to verify that the application has been received.

Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information. Instructions for completing the Financial Data section of the application are included. Applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, answer all questions completely. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated. All information received is considered confidential and is reviewed only by Scholarship Management Services.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of financial need, academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. Financial need will be the primary consideration in the selection of recipients. Potential recipients who demonstrate no need will be ineligible to receive an award.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship Management Services. In no instance does any officer, associate, or employee of Marathon Oil Company Foundation, Marathon, or Speedway SuperAmerica LLC play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision of Scholarship Management Services as final.

Applicants will be notified of their status in late March. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Scholarship awards will only be made to applicants who are eligible dependents as of the date of scholarship selection.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship Management Services processes Marathon Scholars Program payments on behalf of Marathon Oil Company Foundation. Payment is made in one installment on August 15 of each year. The check is mailed to each recipient's home address and made payable to the school for the student.

Obligations

Recipients have no obligation to Marathon Oil Company Foundation, Marathon, or Speedway SuperAmerica LLC. They are, however, required to notify Scholarship Management Services of any changes in address, school enrollment, or other relevant information and to send a complete transcript when requested.

Revisions

The Company reserves the right to modify or terminate this program, in whole or in part, in such manner as the Company determines.
